WikiLeaks fights to stay online

According to an article by Associated Press:

"The 39-year-old Australian is wanted on allegations of rape and other sex crimes that emerged after a trip to Sweden in August.

Assange said that his arrest would do nothing to halt the flow of American diplomatic cables being released by his group and newspapers in several countries, and he threatened to escalate the rush of information if he is taken into custody.

Hundreds of cables have been published by WikiLeaks and several newspapers in recent days. Assange said that all of the cables had already been distributed in a heavily encrypted form to tens of thousands of people.

If something happens to him, he suggested, the password needed to decrypt the data will be released and all the secrets will go out at once.

"History will win," Assange said in a Web chat with readers of The Guardian newspaper, one of the media organizations helping to coordinate the documents' publication. "The world will be elevated to a better place. Will we survive? That depends on you."

WikiLeaks doesn't depend entirely on its website for disseminating secret documents; if it were knocked off the Web, the nationless organization could continue to communicate directly with news organizations. But the site provides a direct line to the public, fulfilling the organization's stated goal of maximum distribution for the secret documents it receives from mainly anonymous contributors.

In an online chat with readers of The Guardian, Assange promised to improve the availability of the website as soon as possible.

"Rest assured I am deeply unhappy that the 3 1/2 years of my work and others is not easily available or searchable by the general public," Assange said."

Celebration Florida

Celebration, Florida was created to be an antidote to the ills and sins of the big cities. It is a community that was built to be a safe haven for families all wrapped up in the Disney package. It was to be a utopian society with white picket fences, palm trees and devoid of those big city type problems like muggings, robberies or murder.

But the Walt Disney created city is not celebrating right now, they are in mourning. One of their citizens was killed in their home.

But they had a good run, the murder of 58-year-old man was the first –reported – major crime to rock Celebration, FL..  The town that has almost 3,000 citizens living in about 950 households, and being in a community where a murder could happen is probably not what they signed up for. Indeed, this is probably the kind of action that they were trying to avoid and no doubt one of the reasons why they wanted to raise their families in a squeaky clean Disney environment.

Will this murder scar the community for years to come? Will it no longer be seen as a the small town utopia it was designed to be? And will Disney go into publicity overdrive to do damage control?

NASA-Funded Research Discovers Life Built With Toxic Chemical

NASA-funded astrobiology research has changed the fundamental knowledge about what comprises all known life on Earth.

Researchers conducting tests in the harsh environment of Mono Lake in California have discovered the first known microorganism on Earth able to thrive and reproduce using the toxic chemical arsenic. The microorganism substitutes arsenic for phosphorus in its cell components.

"The definition of life has just expanded," said Ed Weiler, NASA's associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at the agency's Headquarters in Washington. "As we pursue our efforts to seek signs of life in the solar system, we have to think more broadly, more diversely and consider life as we do not know it."

This finding of an alternative biochemistry makeup will alter biology textbooks and expand the scope of the search for life beyond Earth. The research is published in this week's edition of Science Express.

Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur are the six basic building blocks of all known forms of life on Earth. Phosphorus is part of the chemical backbone of DNA and RNA, the structures that carry genetic instructions for life, and is considered an essential element for all living cells.

Phosphorus is a central component of the energy-carrying molecule in all cells (adenosine triphosphate) and also the phospholipids that form all cell membranes. Arsenic, which is chemically similar to phosphorus, is poisonous for most life on Earth. Arsenic disrupts metabolic pathways because chemically it behaves similarly to phosphate.

"We know that some microbes can breathe arsenic, but what we've found is a microbe doing something new -- building parts of itself out of arsenic," said Felisa Wolfe-Simon, a NASA Astrobiology Research Fellow in residence at the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif., and the research team's lead scientist. "If something here on Earth can do something so unexpected, what else can life do that we haven't seen yet?"

The newly discovered microbe, strain GFAJ-1, is a member of a common group of bacteria, the Gammaproteobacteria. In the laboratory, the researchers successfully grew microbes from the lake on a diet that was very lean on phosphorus, but included generous helpings of arsenic. When researchers removed the phosphorus and replaced it with arsenic the microbes continued to grow. Subsequent analyses indicated that the arsenic was being used to produce the building blocks of new GFAJ-1 cells.

The key issue the researchers investigated was when the microbe was grown on arsenic did the arsenic actually became incorporated into the organisms' vital biochemical machinery, such as DNA, proteins and the cell membranes. A variety of sophisticated laboratory techniques was used to determine where the arsenic was incorporated.

The team chose to explore Mono Lake because of its unusual chemistry, especially its high salinity, high alkalinity, and high levels of arsenic. This chemistry is in part a result of Mono Lake's isolation from its sources of fresh water for 50 years.

The results of this study will inform ongoing research in many areas, including the study of Earth's evolution, organic chemistry, biogeochemical cycles, disease mitigation and Earth system research. These findings also will open up new frontiers in microbiology and other areas of research.

"The idea of alternative biochemistries for life is common in science fiction," said Carl Pilcher, director of the NASA Astrobiology Institute at the agency's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. "Until now a life form using arsenic as a building block was only theoretical, but now we know such life exists in Mono Lake."

The research team included scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey, Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz., Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif., Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Penn., and the Stanford Synchroton Radiation Lightsource in Menlo Park, Calif.

NASA's Astrobiology Program in Washington contributed funding for the research through its Exobiology and Evolutionary Biology program and the NASA Astrobiology Institute. NASA's Astrobiology Program supports research into the origin, evolution, distribution, and future of life on Earth.

90s cartoons rising in popularity

Facebook Profile Trends: Cartoons from the '90s on the Rise

The need for television entertainment is strong; however, a blast to the past can sometimes be stronger. With the marriage of television and the Internet, the union has created a new way to portray oneself. For example, many people who use Facebook will use an avatar instead of a real photo of themselves. The same is true of many other social networking websites as well. However, on Nov. 16, an unofficial "Facebook Cartoon Profile Picture Week" began. The trend apparently started in Cyprus and Greece and hoped to erase "human photos" for that time.

Why Cartoons from the '90s?
Cartoons from the '90s were some of the greatest cartoons ever made and most of those same shows are still going strong today in 2010. In fact, of the 20 most popular '90s cartoons of which include "Pinky and the Brain" (1995 to 1999), "King of the Hill" (1997 to 2009), "SpongebBob Squarepants" (1999 to present), "Family Guy" (1999 to 2002 and 2005 to present), "Futurama" (1999 to 2003), and "Beavis and Butt-Head" (1993 to 1997), 19 of them still run at least once a day on any given cable channel. While most of these popular cartoons were aimed towards the "older generation" of the time, many were cross overs geared towards teens and young adults. Some, such as "Animaniacs" (1993 to 1998) and "Bobby's World" (1990 to 1998), were aimed at elementary school children and typically had a moralistic purpose.

The original '90s cartoon
The original '90s cartoon, though it did not start in the '90s, is The Simpsons; the longest running cartoon in prime time network television history. This cartoon started Dec. 17, 1989, and set the bar for all cartoons to come. This popularity created the "need" for people to become "Simpsonized," or a way to make a cartoon rendering of themselves using Simpsonize Me as a base for the resulting avatar. Another popular cartoon, South Park (1997 to present), also has its own cartoon conversion website called "South Park Studio." Using the same concept as the Simpsonize Me website, users can create South Park characters of themselves using various features of the cartoon characters married with their own features.

Since these two websites popped up in the late '90s, other sites began to offer the same services, and software people can download and use on their computers, although most are not based on specific cartoon characters. For instance, AvatarGenerator.org is a website anyone can go to and pick a cartoon avatar and then edit it based on personal preferences. With the availability of most services free, it is easy to pretend to be someone, even if only online. The freedom to be someone else for a time is liberating and another of the reasons the Facebook '90s cartoon avatar trend is on the rise, not to mention that most of Facebook's users now were the targeted audiences of '90s cartoons.

Amazon Issues Statement re Dropping Wikileaks

Source:  http://mashable.com/2010/12/02/why-amazon-dropped-wikileaks/Why Amazon Dropped WikiLeaks

by Jolie O'Dell

Amazon has issued a statement explaining why it dropped WikiLeaks from its web servers.
Yesterday, we learned that the controversial whistleblower site had been kicked off Amazon Web Services (AWS). The company’s actions were praised by U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, the chairman of the House Security Committee, who said Amazon’s choice was “the right decision and should set the standard for other companies Wikileaks is using to distribute its illegally seized material.”
But Amazon is insisting it didn’t remove WikiLeaks because of political pressure — or because of a recent series of DDoS attacks on the site.
“AWS does not pre-screen its customers, but it does have terms of service that must be followed,” reads a company statement. WikiLeaks was not following them.”
The terms of service state that content supplied by users must be owned by the user, or the user must have the right to publish it. The terms further state that published content should not “cause injury to any person.”
In a strongly worded section of its statement, Amazon goes a step beyond stating that WikiLeaks violated the terms of service, however.
It’s clear that WikiLeaks doesn’t own or otherwise control all the rights to this classified content. Further, it is not credible that the extraordinary volume of 250,000 classified documents that WikiLeaks is publishing could have been carefully redacted in such a way as to ensure that they weren’t putting innocent people in jeopardy.
Human rights organizations have in fact written to WikiLeaks asking them to exercise caution and not release the names or identities of human rights defenders who might be persecuted by their governments.
WikiLeaks is now being hosted by Bahnhof, a company with servers in France and Sweden. This particular company has some of the coolest-looking data centers we’ve ever seen, and they apparently have no problem with hosting WikiLeaks’ content.
What do you think of Amazon’s language in this statement? Should WikiLeaks be exercising more discretion when publishing sensitive documents? Let us know your opinion in the comments.

Is the Dream Act Vote Likely To Pass?

According to M. Rodriquez of the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, this is now a real possibility.

"The final days of the current congressional session may provide an opportunity to pass legislation giving a path to U.S. citizenship to some young people who are in the country illegally.
Supporters of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, also known as the DREAM Act, along with its opponents, say the proposal could be introduced shortly and come up for a vote.

"If it's going to happen, it has to be between now and January," said Jose Calderon, an immigrant rights advocate and a sociology professor at Pitzer College in Claremont"

The DREAM ACT gives hope to people who were as children illegally brought to the USA and meet the required criteria of studies, service and good character.  If deemed eligible they can get permanent residency and have access to financial aid.

Heavy snow hits airports and roads across Europe

Updated at: 1437 PST,  Wednesday, December 01, 2010
Heavy snow hits airports and roads across Europe LONDON: Snow and freezing temperatures severely disrupted airports in Germany and Britain and caused chaos and deaths on roads across Europe on Tuesday.

More than 200 flights were cancelled at Frankfurt airport in Germany, the continent's third busiest, while southern German states were blanketed by snow.

Large parts of Poland were covered in thick snow, causing hundreds of accidents on the roads and at least four people were killed on snowbound roads in the Czech Republic.

It was so cold in France that electricity network RTE warned of cuts in the supply as the country looked set to top record demand levels while 20 percent of high-speed train services to the hard hit southeast were cancelled.

Switzerland suffered its coldest November night for 45 years as temperatures plunged below minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit), according to national weather service Meteosuisse.

Even Spain and Portugal were shivering after snow fell in the northern half of the Iberian peninsula.

Britain has been taken by surprise by its earliest widespread snowfall since 1993, forcing hundreds of schools in Scotland and rural parts of England to close and causing treacherous conditions on roads and at smaller airports.

Scotland and northeast England had fresh snowfall and the freezing weather has started moving down England's east coast while London had its first sprinkling of snow this winter.

London City Airport, a popular departure point for business travellers, was forced at one point to suspend all flights because of snow and ice before resuming with a heavily interrupted service.

Edinburgh, Scotland's busiest airport, was disrupted for a second day, but London's Heathrow, one of the world's busiest airports, said all its flights were operating normally.

Britain's Met Office issued severe weather warnings for most regions of the country and warned snow was heading south.

A 53-year-old man was crushed to death when a recovery truck rolled into two other vehicles in snowy conditions on a motorway near Doncaster in northern England, police said.

Scotland, on St Andrew's Day, its national day, recorded the coldest temperature in Britain overnight Monday with the mercury plunging to minus 15 degrees Celsius (five degrees Fahrenheit).

Thousands of schoolchildren had to stay at home in Scotland for a second day while 42 schools were closed in picturesque Cornwall in southwest England because of snow.

But the bitter cold in London failed to deter several thousand students from taking part in the latest demonstration against the government's plans to raise university tuition fees.

In Germany, heavy snowfall blanketed the southern states of Bavaria, Baden-Wuerttemberg and Saxony and even colder weather is forecast across the country later this week.

At Frankfurt airport, even when the runways were cleared of snow, aircraft had to be de-iced, causing further delays.

By mid-morning local time, a total of 128 arrivals and 80 departures had been cancelled, with many other flights experiencing significant delays, an airport spokeswoman said.

In the eastern German city of Leipzig, a playful snowball fight descended into a violent melee involving more than 500 people.

"The black-clad mob threw not only snow but also firecrackers, bottles and rocks," a police spokesman said.

Police had to intervene to break up the mob and two officers were wounded in the fray late Monday, while the driver of a passing car also fell victim as the mob smashed his windscreen with a beer bottle and injured his arm.

On a lighter note, players from German Bundesliga football team Bayer Leverkusen said they would wear ski masks for their Europa League game in Rosenberg, Norway, as they battle sub-zero conditions.

The Czech Republic experienced up to 25 centimetres (10 inches) of fresh snow in some cities, causing power cuts and travel disruption. Four people were killed and 80 were injured on the country's roads.

The Polish capital Warsaw was snarled up by huge traffic jams after 30 centimetres of snow fell since Monday.

Lorry drivers were stranded in their vehicles for 20 hours near Warsaw after a truck skidded and blocked the road.
