Harry Potter Plagiarism Case Dismissed by US Judge

J.K Rowling, author of the ultra famous Harry Potter series has been cleared of all plagiarism charges by US Judge  Scheindlin.  According to the AAP news source published on Yahoo:

"A US federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit alleging the wildly successful Harry Potter books were plagiarised from a story from a little-known British author.

The suit filed in New York against the publisher of the J.K. Rowling books had argued the stories were inspired by Adrian Jacobs's The Adventures of Willy the Wizard No 1 Livid Land," published in 1987.

Judge Shira Sheindlin wrote that there were major differences between the works, contrary to claims that Rowling had borrowed from Jacobs's book for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

"Indeed, a reading of the works unequivocally confirms that they are distinctly different in both substance and style, and ultimately engender very different visceral responses from their readers," the judge said in a 49-page ruling.

"The contrast between the total concept and feel of the works is so stark that any serious comparison of the two strains credulity."

Scholastic, the US publisher for the Potter series, said it was satisfied by the dismissal of the suit from the estate of Jacobs."

Sachin Tendulkar Scores 51st Century in South Africa

Great news for Indian Cricket Lovers.  Their favourite Sachin tendulkar has just scored his 51st century (and the first century in first class cricket of 2011)  in Capetown.

Source Yahoo Sports News:

"Tendulkar counters inspired spell by Steyn

By Ken Borland
CAPE TOWN, Jan 4 (Reuters) - Sachin Tendulkar effectively countered an inspired new ball spell from Dale Steyn to take India closer to South Africa's first innings total on the third day of the third and deciding test on Tuesday.
Tendulkar had reached 136 not out, his 51st test century, in India's 316 for six in reply to South Africa's 362 at tea. The series is tied 1-1.

Steyn struck immediately after lunch when he trapped Cheteshwar Pujara (2) lbw with an unplayable delivery that pitched on leg stump and then swung away late to hit the batsman on the back pad.
He was quick to follow up with the wicket of Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who edged another fine away swinger to be caught at third slip for a duck.

The world's number one ranked bowler should also have disposed of Harbhajan Singh when another fantastic delivery had the batsman groping to no avail as the ball swung into off stump. But to one nation's dismay and another's joy, the bails somehow failed to fall and Harbhajan had an unlikely reprieve on six.

Steyn was rested after a brilliant spell of two for three in seven overs and the threat eased for India's batsmen. Tendulkar and Harbhajan (34 not out) had added 69 by tea. "

Pakistani governor killed by own guard in Punjab

ISLAMABAD – The governor of Pakistan's powerful Punjab province was shot dead in the capital Tuesday by one of his guards, who told interrogators afterward that he was angry about the politician's stance against the country's blasphemy law, officials said.

The killing of Salman Taseer was the most high-profile assassination of a political figure in Pakistan since the slaying of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in December 2007, and it rattled a country already dealing with crises ranging from a potential collapse of the government to Islamist militancy.

The killing could also add to concerns about inroads by Islamist extremists and fundamentalists into Pakistan's security establishment.

Taseer was a member of Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party and a close associate of President Asif Ali Zardari, Bhutto's widower. The governor was vocal on a range of subjects, even using Twitter to get across his views.

In recent days, as the People's Party has faced the loss of its coalition partners, the 56-year-old Taseer has insisted that the government will survive. But it was his very public stance against the blasphemy law that apparently led to his killing.
Pakistan's blasphemy law has come under greater scrutiny in recent days after a Christian woman was sentenced to death for allegedly insulting Islam's Prophet Muhammad. The law effectively orders death for anyone convicted of insulting Islam.

An intelligence official interrogating the suspect, identified as Mumtaz Qadri, told The Associated Press that the elite force security guard was boasting about the assassination, saying he was proud to have killed a blasphemer.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to media on the record.

Dozens of Pakistanis are sentenced to death each year under the blasphemy law, which dates back to the 1980s military rule of Gen. Mohammad Zia ul-Haq. Most cases are thrown out by higher courts and no executions have been carried out, but human rights activists have long complained that the law is used to settle rivalries and persecute religious minorities.
Under pressure from Islamist parties, the People's Party said recently it would not pursue changes to the law.

"He was the most courageous voice after Benazir Bhutto on the rights of women and religious minorities," said a crying Farahnaz Ispahani, an aide to Zardari and friend of Taseer. "God, we will miss him."

Police official Mohammad Iftikhar said Taseer was gunned down after he reached Khosar Market, a shopping center in Islamabad popular with Westerners and wealthy Pakistanis. Five other people were wounded as other security personnel responded to the attack.

Australian Floods of Biblical Proportions

Hundreds of millions for flood relief: PM

January 3, 2011 - 1:39PM

AAP

Relief payments for victims of Queensland's devastating floods will total many hundreds of millions of dollars, Prime Minister Julia Gillard says.

Grants of up to $25,000 for small business and more than $1000 for every adult with immediate needs have been made available in one of Australia's biggest ever flood relief packages, announced on Monday.   Ms Gillard paid tribute to communities coping with the worst deluge they had seen and insisted the government would do all it could to help.
"All in all, with commonwealth government assistance flowing, it will be in the order of many hundreds of millions of dollars," she told reporters in Sydney.

"This is very, very severe, affecting communities that are very geographically dispersed."
While outlining a raft of assistant payments, Ms Gillard also revealed Australia had received offers of assistance from New Zealand as well as a call from the US Embassy asking what help it could provide.
Military assistance will also be used to help speed up the recovery process, with the government setting up a "joint task force" of about 80 personnel, Ms Gillard added.
A C130 transport aircraft is taking more than 50 tonnes of food supplies on Monday and Tuesday to the worst-affected areas.

"For some communities it is the biggest floods they have ever seen," Ms Gillard added.
Ms Gillard, who visited the crisis-torn region on Friday, consulted the Queensland government in drawing up the assistance payment package.

Dead Birds Fall From Sky in Arkansas

Wildlife officials in the US are trying to determine what caused more than 1,000 black birds to die and fall from the sky over an Arkansas town.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission says the dead birds fell over a two-kilometre area with an aerial survey revealing that no dead birds were found outside of that area.

Ornithologist Karen Rowe says the birds showed physical trauma and she believes the flock could have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail.
